David Graham 1932 – 2023
I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of David Graham, a lifelong campaigner for peace and social and environmental justice, and founder of the Vegan Organic Network in 1996. I was put in touch with David by Kathleen Jannaway of the Movement for Compassionate Living shortly after he had proposed the idea, and in spring 1997 he drove down from Manchester to attend the first ‘VOHAN South East Regional Gathering’ held in my front room and on local allotments (see attached write-up from the ‘VOHAN News International’ issue one, now Growing Green International Magazine). Inspired by David’s enthusiasm, good humour and supportive attitude, this was a pioneering weekend that laid the groundwork for several permaculture, forest gardening and veganic projects in the area, as well as thrashing out some of the ideas for what has indeed now become a global movement and organising network.

David continued to be a firm supporter of the ideas of Vegan Permaculture, indeed, throughout his life, he was devoted to promoting a peaceful, compassionate, and life-affirming world where all forms of life can thrive and support one another. His goal encompassed the entire environment, including animals, birds, fish, humans, water, and air. David’s creation of VON and his vision of a Green, Clean, Cruelty-Free World aimed to raise awareness of vegan organic growing as a solution to many of the world’s environmental challenges. He knew that by working with nature to encourage biodiversity and recognising the vital role of soil, we can produce healthy and nutritious food. VON has since grown into a thriving organization, with farms around the world successfully producing healthy crops.
These words, written by him in the last year of his life, summarise his vision;
RIP David Graham, 14th January, 1932 – April 17th, 2023.
