“Permaculture, to me, is idling in action: while we idlers sit around talking about it, the permaculturists actually do it.” – Tom Hodgkinson, founder and editor of the Idler magazine

“Years of permaculture gardening wisdom packed into a beautifully written and illustrated book. A riveting read for both the beginner and more experienced gardener.” – Pippa Chapman, author of The Plant Lover’s Backyard Forest Garden

Lavishly illustrated throughout, MAKE COMPOST NOT WORK! collects 20 years of Graham Burnett’s gardening columns and artwork from the Idler magazine.

With an apprenticeship in producing punk fanzines back in the early 1980s, Graham has been teaching permaculture and making books and pamphlets under the name of Spiralseed since the beginning of the twenty first century. His titles include the classic Permaculture A Beginners Guide, with more than 10,000 copies in print (including French, Spanish, Croatian and Hebrew translations), and The Vegan Book of Permaculture published by Permanent Publications.

Since 2005 he has also written and illustrated columns for the Idler magazine. Collected together here for the first time, these articles and essays offer a mix of practical advice, insights and philosophy on subjects ranging from TV lifestyle gardening, soil life, composting toilets, forest gardening, urban container growing and wine-making through to mindfulness, alternative livelihoods, fungal connections, art, punk rock and much more. The book also includes artwork made by Graham to accompany his writings, and a number of original watercolour paintings produced especially for this book.

It’s been a labour of love compiling, editing and designing this beautiful publication over the last few months and we can’t wait for it to be a real, physical thing in the world rather than a bunch of pixels on a computer screen! The work is all done, now it’s just a matter of raising the funds to cover the printing costs…
