Taking the issue of plastic pollution worldwide
As a certified B Corporation, being socially and environmentally responsible in all aspects of our business is incredibly important to us at Onya.
When Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, the Founder of Plastic Free July & The Plastic Free Foundation, mentioned to us that she was interested in doing a short speaking tour of the West Coast of the USA to spread awareness on the inspiring work being done by her organization, we were thrilled to support her efforts by becoming the official tour sponsor and joining her on the Plastic Free July Tour.
We support the Plastic Free Foundation as their goal is to educate as many people as possible around the world about how to reduce single use plastic in their lives. In 2019 it is estimated that more than 230 million people around the world participated in Plastic Free July and reduced the amount of single use plastic they use and we are proud to be part of the movement.
Talking the talk & walking the walk together
We were so inspired by the conversations we had with other organizations focussed on taking positive action in solving the issue of plastic pollution in the USA.
Our first stop was visiting the energetic and charismatic Algalita team and taking a tour of their new refill zero waste store BYO Long Beach. Algalita’s goal in their words is to “inspire the next generation of visionaries to believe in a better future” and since 1999 Algalita have been working hard to raise awareness of the issue of plastic pollution.
In addition to co-sponsoring a Conversation with Plastic Pollution Coalition and their passionate Founder Dianna Cohen at the Snapchat head office in Los Angeles, we also travelled to San Francisco where we were pleased to present our message to alumni at the University of California, Berkeley.
We also locked in a meeting and talk at The Nature Conservancy’s incredible San Francisco offices. The Nature Conservancy operate in 72 countries around the world and their mission is to conserve the lands and water on which all life depends, and they do incredible work across the world.
We were also delighted to have the opportunity to meet with the inspiring Katherine Kellogg, the Founder of lifestyle blog Going Zero Waste and talented author of 101 Ways To Go Zero Waste.
Taking plastic free to the great outdoors
We attended a zero waste picnic meetup in San Francisco with Zero Waste Chef Anne-Marie Bonneau. Ann-Marie is a passionate activist for reducing personal waste and has made it her mission to be as close to zero waste in her life as possible. Her social media feeds are full of incredibly useful tips for reducing food waste as well as plenty of information on zero waste food storage – she is a huge inspiration!
Another outdoor activity we participated in was spending a morning collecting trash along the California coast with the Surfrider Foundation and were there for the announcement of the plastic takeaway container ban coming to San Francisco.
Show your Plastic Free Foundation Support
To further increase awareness and encourage action, we teamed up with Plastic Free Foundation for a Limited Edition carry pouch version of our award winning reusable produce bags. When you purchase this Plastic Free July Reusable Produce Bag custom design 8 pack, a portion of the proceeds will be going directly to the Plastic Free July Foundation, so they can continue their great work in raising awareness of the issue of plastic pollution around the world as well as providing educational tools to help everyone from big corporations to individuals get on board. As with all other purchases on our website, we also donate to environmental not for profits and social enterprise partners through our membership with 1% for the Planet.
